Read 27 Books: Night Swimming

Written by Robin Schwarz, Night Swimming is a fast and amusing beach read.  Charlotte Clapp is the protagonist, a 253-lb. depressed bank employee in a small town with only one practicing physician.  After receiving unpleasant test results from the doctor, Charlotte is given the push she needs to start on an adventure that lasts the rest of Charlotte's life.  While the writer paints beautiful images, such as a the sights Charlotte encounters on her way to New Orleans, I felt myself stymied by waves of incredulity.  How can someone live in the posh California digs as Blossom does, while buying the expensive paintings and trinkets, on that budget?  Why tell a specific sum at all?  Why did Charlotte memorize those account numbers by heart, years earlier?  Character traits and plot points are brought forward, used and discarded, without care for their placement along the story arc, leaving me to roll my eyes and close the book.  Still, I wanted to finish.  Throughout the story, I felt myself thinking, This is what would happen if I could publish a first draft.  Thanks to this story, I have renewed resolve to go to my local pool and swim laps.

What's the most ridiculous book you've ever read?
