Summertime Optimism

Through the weeds and the fence, biotch!
Is there something special about summertime that makes us feel more optimistic? Among the friends I've talked to recently there is an emerging feeling of positivity. I've heard about people who are regaining confidence, re-emerging from proverbial cocoons, and hard work paying off.  Even as I am at the beginning of several efforts I feel excited, too. Good things are on their way!

But it seems a little odd, right? How is it possible that so many people's efforts are coming to fruition at the same time? There must be more to it than that. Is it possible that for this (mostly) Midwestern bunch, the sun has finally been shining on warm grounds with a frequency that we now feel a change, having enough vitamin D in our systems to finally brush off those wintery grumps? Perhaps an increase in good feelings from Fourth of July celebrations with our favorite people, paired with a little time off? Psychology Today offers a great article about four kinds of happiness that come from nature.

Do you feel optimistic this week?  Is your tenacity paying off?  Why do you think we feel this way?

  1. Hrm, I've always wondered about this. Even now, when I don't hate winter anymore, I still feel like spring/summer is the year's "on" time (and fall & winter = the off switch), like this is how it's supposed to always be and winter's just an interruption. Part of it must have to do with gradual changes in our circadian rhythms; part of it must have to do with vitamin D; getting different wavelengths. I don't know, but collectively we all must feel it. I wonder if people at more equatorial latitudes have seasonal moods?

  2. I also wonder about the people closer to the equator. If not now, when do they hit their stride?
