America's Unconscious

Independence Day, 2010.  It was humid, in the upper 90s. This wonderful Lady Liberty was one of the last in the lineup, yet still holding her torch high and smiling at the end of the parade.

Do you ever get the feeling that older generations, no matter their partisanship, had a real collective unconscious?  A true excitement for the values this country promised, perhaps delivered, but that all citizens and soldiers worked for?  Or is it an illusion a younger person sees when they look at an older generation: seeing only a few handfuls of these patriotic souls who remember the softened edges of a stronger feeling?

What will the young generations' collective excitement be for, if anything?
